Boundless freedom on the Kitzsteinhorn at 3000 meters
Unforgettable days of sport and wintertime on the glacier for the whole family
The Kitzsteinhorn, on the edge of Hohe Tauern National Park, is one of the most legendary glacier ski areas in the Eastern Alps: Downhill and cross-country skiers, snowboarders, ski tourers, winter hikers and snow lovers enjoy all kinds of freedom here at 3000 m above sea level. Whether skiing, sitting at Salzburg’s highest restaurant or participating in a ranger tour: Visitors find their personal corner of heaven here at eye-level with the highest mountains in Austria, including the 3798 m high Grossglockner. A diverse world of nature and memorable experiences, such as TOP OF SALZBURG/Gipfelwelt 3000 and the new “Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour”, guarantees unforgettable days in the snow amid one of the most beautiful landscapes anywhere in the Alps. The new K-ONNECTION cableway, with a valley station in the town center of Kaprun, makes ski-in-ski-out to and from the glacier possible for the very first time, promising unbeatable convenience and memorable impressions.
The freedom and exhilaration that only a glacier can offer: High on the Kitzsteinhorn at 3000 m, the gray daily routine is a distant memory, while the sky appears close enough to touch. The imposing panorama from TOP OF SALZBURG/Gipfelwelt 3000 at 3029 m above sea level treats you to unobstructed views of the breathtaking three-thousanders inside Hohe Tauern National Park, their snowcapped peaks glistening in the winter sun. For good reason, the Kitzsteinhorn’s reputation precedes it: It is a magical mountain with an enormous magnetism. Hobby sports fans as well as top athletes enjoy fantastic days in the snow here. And winter lasts longer than you ever would have imagined possible: Already in autumn, impatient winter sports fans are able to respond to the “call of the Kitz”, while the excellent snow conditions guarantee a long season that extends into early summer.
Generational project K-ONNECTION unites and makes Ski-in Ski-out possible
The new K-ONNECTION is a monumental step forward in the history of Kaprun and the Kitzsteinhorn: With a total length of over 12 km, as of winter 2019/20 it will connect downtown Kaprun with the popular Maiskogel Family Ski Area and the TOP OF SALZBURG on the Kitzsteinhorn. For guests and winter sports fans, the new K-ONNECTION means significantly shorter distances, direct ski-in-ski-out for the first time between the town center and glacier, and the ultimate in comfort thanks to the newly built Kaprun Center including valley station, ticket windows, ski depot and sports shop. The heart of this generational project is the 4.3 km long 3K K-ONNECTION, linking the Maiskogel mountain station with Langwied on the Kitzsteinhorn: It is Salzburg’s first tri-cable gondola and, with its 32 ATRIA designer cabins by Doppelmayr – deployed for the first time worldwide – including two special Explorer Cabins, surpasses every expectation with respect to exclusivity and the overall “lift experience”. And thanks to the new “Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour”, every week guests have the opportunity, accompanied by a National Park Ranger, to take in an eagle’s-eye view and traverse four climate zones in just a few hours: a never-before-seen expedition from the valley to the eternal glacier ice.
The Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area is part of the new ALPIN CARD
As a glacier ski area, the Kitzsteinhorn isn’t only able to guarantee great snow conditions from autumn until early summer, it is also part of the new ALPIN CARD ticket alliance. Beginning in winter 2019/20, it will bring together three premium ski regions: Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun. A single ticket gives winter sports fans the chance to enjoy 408 piste kilometers and 121 lifts including the glacier. These three top ski areas combined feature a wide array of themed pistes, routes, children’s ski areas, snowparks, along with countless friendly huts and mountain restaurants.
Complete freedom, unforgettable glacier moments and family happiness on the Maiskogel
Skiing on the glacier is a special experience: Until early summer, Salzburg’s only glacier ski area allows you to indulge your love for winter sports in all of its colorful facets. The Kitzsteinhorn is characterized by absolute snow certainty, broad pistes, state-of-the-art lifts, inviting restaurants and enormous variety sure to appeal to all winter sportsmen and -women. The highlights include three snowparks as well as Austria’s most amazing superpipe, the “Black Mamba” piste with a maximum gradient of 63%, the Skimovie hill, along with five clearly marked routes for free riders, info points as well as the “Freeride Info Base”. For ski tourers, the Kitzsteinhorn features two marked ascent routes, while the Glacier Trail at 2900 m awaits cross-country enthusiasts.
The Maiskogel represents the perfect, “gentle” complement to the glacier: Wide and easy pistes, ready navigability, the comfort of the MK Maiskogelbahn along with the “Maisi Park” make Kaprun’s local mountain an ideal family ski area at a moderate elevation. The K-ONNECTION unites the Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn more closely than ever before, for unbeatable ski-in-ski-out convenience.
Actually, their “Power of Ten” offer has demonstrated the family-friendliness of the Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel for years: Every Saturday, children and teens under age 19 pay only € 10 for day-passes.
Family-friendly offers on the Kitzsteinhorn away from the pistes
At 3029 m above sea level, the year-round sightseeing attraction TOP OF SALZBURG/Gipfelwelt 3000 promises one-of-a-kind insights into Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest nature sanctuary in the Alps. Visitor highlights include two panoramic viewing platforms, Cinema 3000 showing an impactful film “Kitzsteinhorn – THE NATURE”, the National Park Gallery as well as the highest restaurant in Salzburg.
The annual “ICE CAMP – art igloo presented by Audi” is an astonishing combination of art space, ice bar with sundeck and an automobile presentation at over 2600 meters. This structure made from 60 tons of ice and 2500 m³ of snow is a popular gathering spot for winter sports fans and excursioners.
